Washington Peace Rally February 15, 2003

This is a photo from the Washington DC Peace Rally on February 15, 2003.  The rally was part of a larger world wide series of peace rallies.  It was a bitterly cold day, but no one seemed to mind, we were focused on peace.  The police presence was overwhelming and the crowd was roped into a very small section of the Mall.  It was frightening how closed in I felt at times, although the crowd was calm and adapted- eventually the mass just busted down the fencing to make enough space for the people.

I've had this photo on my office door for some time-  the juxtaposition of the police on the roof in riot gear and the portrait of His Holiness The Dali Lama seems to illustrate the irony of that day.  We came together to rally for peace.  Peace.   Is peace more threatening than War?

Peacefully.
